MOUNT PLEASANT, SC (August 1, 2005) –
The Mount Pleasant Police Department will host its 14th Citizens Police Academy beginning September 14, 2005. “The Mount Pleasant Police Department believes its mission to serve the community can best be achieved if the citizens of the community are active participants with the Police Department in its efforts. Critical to the success of this shared responsibility are well-informed citizens who have an awareness of the mission, resources, practices, and services of the Department. To that end, the Mount Pleasant Police Department has established the Citizen Police Academy,” said Lt. Ben Marlow.

The Mount Pleasant’s Citizen’s Police Academy program – the third of its kind in South Carolina – will meet one night each week in the Police Training Room. During these sessions, Police Department personnel will instruct citizens in the organization, procedures, and services of the Department.

The Academy gives citizens an enhanced understanding of the role of law enforcement in the community, and promotes a free exchange of ideas between the community and department personnel. The ultimate goal is to foster a better partnership with the citizens of Mount Pleasant

More than just an educational opportunity for citizens, the Academy has proven beneficial to the police department as well. Several graduates have become volunteers for the police department, good will ambassadors for the Town of Mount Pleasant, and promoters of the Academy itself.

The next Citizen’s Police Academy session will resume on September 14, 2005. The classes will be held between 6:00 - 9:00PM at the Mount Pleasant Police Department, 100 Ann Edwards Lane, Mount Pleasant. Anyone interested in enrolling in the Citizens Police Academy should contact Lt. Ben Marlow at (843) 884-4176.
