Criminal Investigations
While many incident investigations are followed up on by officers assigned to the Uniformed Patrol Bureau, the Criminal Investigations Bureau (CIB) is a support services bureau tasked with providing additional, sometimes long term, investigative efforts.
This bureau is separated into two (2) units made up of detectives who investigate offenses that are categorized either as “Crimes Against Persons” or “Crimes Against Property”. These “plain clothes” officers investigate crimes in areas such as Death Investigations, Robbery, Rape, and Assault as well as Burglary, Larceny, and “White Collar” crime respectively.
The bureau also assigns specialized caseloads that handle juvenile investigations, elderly abuse and neglect matters, and the operation of a comprehensive victim’s advocate program.
NARCOTICS
Increased populations open the door for increased narcotic, vice, gang, and organized crime activities. The Mount Pleasant Police Department Narcotics Bureau utilizes “plain clothes” officers to deter this activity and prosecute those who violate drug laws. Through surveillance, confidential informant information, and community cooperation these officers seek to protect our community from the influences of drugs and other illicit activities. These officers seek out, arrest, and prosecute drug offenders with a follow up process that includes seizure of assets that were the product of illegal drug sales.
EVIDENCE
Evidence of a crime is crucial to the successful prosecution of a criminal offense. This “evidence” can take on many forms and it’s utility can be lost if it is improperly handled or maintained. The Mount Pleasant Police Department Evidence Section is staffed by Evidence/Crime Scene Technicians who respond to crime scenes for the purpose of capturing and preserving evidence of a crime that can be used in a court of law. These officers and civilians have specialized training in forensics and testify as needed in criminal prosecutions. The unit also secures evidence obtained by other officers and submits same for analysis as indicated.
